Looking back at 2007
So are you guys clear now that I can cook? Good.
But seriously why my update wasn’t as regular as before (this is a joke! I have never been updating regularly!) was partly due to work. No, not my internship although it pretty much eats up my day. But rather, other works that I currently have my hands full on.
Maybe you’ll get to see my work soon…
Anyway, the past few weeks have been pretty nice eh? For 3 consecutive weeks, there’s a public holiday somewhere in them. And come next Tuesday, it’ll be New Year! Shucks! So fast?!?
I can forsee that 2008 is gonna be quite an eventful year for 2 reasons already…
- I will officially graduate from Singapore Polytechnic
- I will be enlisted for National Service
And that itself calls for a national mourning.
Now as 2007 comes to a close, let’s take a look at my “Top 10 things that rocked MY 2007”.
That’s what people always do everytime the year comes to an end and you wanna recall what had happened so you record down every inch of details yadayadayada… right?
Oh I forgot… the list, in no particular order:
10) Victoria Beckham’s Bob-turned-Pob look

Seriously speaking, it looks best on her. Period. Many people tried and the number who failed didn’t vary that much either. My point is: the hairstyle doesn’t suit everyone even if everyone is having a go at it.
It’s distractingly-scary to see a Bob-head everywhere I turn in the streets. It’s like those 1980s space-themed movies where the ladies are all blond Bob-heads with big, blue eyes and the gentlemen have slick, Brylcreem-laden hair.
They all look the same!
9) Section 377A of the Penal Code

Basically it touches the topic of gays in Singapore. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with the gahmen. Gays didn’t lay their hands on them, so why should the gahmen provoke them in return?
If the perfect partner just so happen to come in the form of the same sexual orientation, you are no God to destroy someone’s happiness? All along I thought love was unbounded, no? Does the gahmen fear that the youngsters will have the wrong mindset about this issue? Then I’ll rebutt that it’s all about education.
Just like how inter-racial marriages were a taboo in the last decade, we have certainly come a long way since then.
The gahmen should have a law for mat reps instead. They provoke others, accidentally or not, even when you don’t disturb them, participate in indecent acts and hell yeah they do create a lot of a nuisance.
Go gahmen, I have no qualms about that.
8 ) Timbaland

Perhaps his real works are behind those music consoles but what normal people like me, and maybe you, see is the end product.
He may have boosted the careers of many singers that you already know without me listing them, but what I hear from Timbaland are just “Eh… eh… eh… oh” in OneRepublic’s Apologize and “Your hips, your thighs, you got me hypnotized” (repeat 999 times) in Ayo Technology.
But still he carved a name for himself and for that I gave him credit. Rumours had it that he’s on his way to mend Britney Spears’ career. Yes! It’s Britney, bitch!
It seemed that Timbaland tends to have a say knack in irritating songs. I wonder what other similar songs he had his hands on…
Ella ella ella eh eh…
7) Little Miss Whatever, skinny jeans, vintage dressing, leggings, t-bars, tunics

I cheated a little for this category but they all fall into one general one – trends. The thing I like about trends is that it is refreshing. Why I hate it is because it becomes common. Fast.
Just like the Bob/Pob look, it suits only certain people. And just like the Bob/Pob look too, everyone wants to give it a go.
I don’t diss trends. It doesn’t mean you if wear a Little Miss Whatever tee, I’ll hate you for good. Just don’t be a walking Topshop and follow trends from head to toe.
Maybe it’s my mantra of “You wear your clothes, not vice-versa”. Pardon me for that.
I wonder what the trend for 2008 will be… Hmm…
6) LeadershipTrainingCamp@Redang Island

This is the furthest place I have been throughout my entire life. For those of you who are clueless, Redang Island is located off the Malaysian state of Terengganu. And that’s just a few stones throw away from Thailand.
Previously, my record was Kota Tinggi, Malacca where my Sec 3 camp was held.
I must admit Redang was the only time I get to feel nature at its finest. The view overlooking the vast ocean was as magnificent as the stars that sprinkled across the night sky.
For the first time, I ate buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner; “clubbed” to the techno beats of the ‘90s; watched MoMo Tea repeatedly only to realize that it was meant to be aired 24/7; rode those speedboats across the sea to get to the snorkeling area.
To top it all off, I rode the SuperStar Virgo on my way back to Singapore – yet another first for me. Shucks, I miss Redang.
And to set the record straight, I’ve never sat in an aeroplane before.
5) Rihanna

Because of her, I dread it everytime it rains. Because of her, um-brella becomes um-be-rella, and if you’re unlucky people will add a certain Ella ella ella eh eh… before they stop either because someone slapped them or screamed “STOP IT LAH!!!”
As much as her songs irk people, they bring people together too. You’ll hear unified screams whenever her song intro breaks into the dance floor. And I like Don’t Stop the Music and Hate That I Love You.
Being a pedestrian, I loathe her more. I can shout “Eh driver! Just Shut Up and Drive, drive, drive…”
4) Babe

She just has to be on the list, right? For everything that had happened between us for the past 1 year, yes she ought to be. If not because of her, I wouldn’t have gone on to achieve so much things and discovered even more new stuff.
From small, little words of encouragement to a sturdy pillar of support, she has been the one who persistently pushed my limits when I thought I had reached my maximum. At the end of the day, I guess what you really want deep down inside is someone who can relate to you and understands you best.
And oh yeah, thanks for reigniting my interest in rugby
3) My cannot-make-it-semi-long hair

Okay, it’s not long but it’s unlike mine now. Frankly speaking, back then I was just looking into growing my hair and see how long it can go. Come today I ask myself…. WHAT WAS I THINKING!?!?
But my raging hormones at that time had constantly produced pimples on my forehead, which was partially covered by my long hair. So that means I had to make do with that long, curly-ended fringe.
Long hair is also equivalent to flat hair. I don’t like. Plus I can’t really style it and it was freaking hot yo! But it was kinda cool to wear a hairband at home. Hahaha!
I guess now I’ll just play around with short, mid-length hairstyles till I meet with my destiny of having a botak head.
2) Sean Kingston

“Say yo! Sean Kingston! Your way to myyyyy Top 10 list… is by having a catchy song. You got singing to it, humming to it, whistling to it…”
There aren’t many songs that got stuck in your head this year, are there? After Rihanna’s Umbrella comes Sean Kingston’s Beautiful Girls. He’s 18 and he’s like that already. I don’t mean his size but he’s achievements rather.
Look at yourself in the mirror, Fitree. What are you doing!!!
1) Arab Sreet

Ever since I discovered the place, I never grew sick of it. I don’t fault those who do ‘cause the area is so small! How many places can you actually go right?
Well, find me another place which moves at such a laid-back pace, coupled with decent food at decent prices and I’ll shut my mouth up.
You may argue that it’s a Malay place, that’s why I feel closer but I’m more inclined to the fact that this place gives justice to the word ‘chill’. The place clearly lacks mad rushing people, tall buildings or jam-packed cars on the roads.
For now I only frequent Kampong Glam Café and Mosi Café to fill my stomach. And I just found out recently that Blu Jaz Café is a nice, cosy place that has both jazz and club music. Shopping is only limited to designer items but they’re worth the look.
Pitch Black has yummy brownies and an uber-cool concept, and I’ve yet to revisit that uncle who has a vintage shop selling (what else?) vintage stuff! And when I say vintage, I include items too. I saw my auntie’s old radio set being sold there for $30!
And Le Claire still remain as the best place to go for sheesha!
***
Actually there’s more to my 2007 like my virgin visit to MOS and ZOUK, the discovery of Jeff Dunham (an amazing ventriloquist), the start of my 3-month Internship programme, coming out tops in conceptualising a SMRT campaign…
I am sure your year has been meaningful too. I am sure there will be things that hit you hard, that left a long-lasting smile on your face when you look back at it.
In the light of the new year, I hope you guys have a much better year ahead. Just remember to stay positive aites? Thanks Nurul, our resident lil red alien, for giving me the “inspiration” to write this entry. Heh
My new year resolutions? Well, let’s just say I don’t believe in them anymore. Goals are just reminders, don’t you think so? What’s important is that you achieve what you wanna achieve.
And that I don’t think that needs any form of reminding.
Happy 2008 everyone!

I am legend to me is just so-so. i’d put Transformers above it anytime. But it does gets me thinking in other ways though…
HAHHA, check out my last entry of the year, it’s taking me 3 days(including tmr) to wrap up my year! HAHA, be sure to taggggg (: HAHAHA. gilers or what!
i liked the way u summarised the year. yea, baybehhh! WEEE!
I think your entry topped mine in terms of word count!
no new year resolutions for me in 2008. I leave it to the ‘gahmen’ to think abt it for me… But most importantly, we both have to visit Tekong Resort before getting at least 3 chevrons. Darn, i want at least a bar. Wat abt u? a crab? wakakakakaka…
eh! i’m not used to the army talk lah! what crab what bar you talking about? but according to my naive mind, I don’t wanna chiong, that’s all man…
Hehe thats a nice entry, fitree..anyway, sori but i’ve tagged u..”17 things that really happened 2 me but people may not believe.”
Meanwhile happy new yr:)
i’ll try my best to come up with the list! Happy ‘08!
happy new year yo!
Happy ‘08!
Yes Redang is awesome! I was a feet away from those Giant turtles while snorkeling and they were really cute. I did deep sea fishing and caught 2 fish. I chased for baby sharks which were really puny.
Redang is a place where you’ve just got to go again. You should try Tioman Island, that’s where you can see baby sharks as big as you while snorkeling and see their mommies and daddies swimming as your speed boat make its way thru the island with their fin popping up. No kidding!
Btw, Umbrella was the anthem of the year on MTV Asia’s top 100 hits. Ella ella eh eh…=)
they say got real sharks at Redang’s Sharks Bay! You know when you go to the other side of the island? Well, that’s what the locals say lah..
And the fin popping out is like the ones in movies and whatnots ah? The sharks never “ngap” anyone? Hehehe I’m so bad…
And baby sharks were puny? I think you were just lucky.. hahaha
Hey, bloghopped!
Anyway, I was supposed to go Redang this year (oh another “Missed out on 2007″ to add…) for a very deserving break (which I have yet to have. Hmm.) but (school)work got in the way. Boo, right?
Also I just had to tag because when the sun shines we shine together. Oh wait sorry, no..i mean i HAD to tag because Kaki 5 not being in Haji Lane anymore this year is making a vair vair vair large effect in my life.
Is like now I’m really truly leaving my childhood behind.
So, stranger. Arab St fo’ life yo! (HAH) and merry 2008.
I was wondering why Kaki 5 cafe closed down too. If you are sad because of it, I’m sad cause I didn’t even get the chance to step into it. I heard it’s very old skool. KInda nice concept to it… and now, it’s gone!
Anyway, you can always go Redang again but not now ah since it’s the monsoon period. BUT must go you know! Since I bet you’ve saved up for it and all. It’s the best break you can ever have.
Happy 2008 to you too stranger!
happy 08 bro!
and oooh, kg glam cafe. Karipap + sambal tumis = perfect tea time combo (and a gd reason to leave the office) haha!
Have a good one!
mak oiiii sounds so nice!!! why did it go away? It’s so unfair to me…
Happy 08!
well i didn’t watch transformers : *gasps*
*gasp* how could you not?!?!
sec 3 camp at kota tinggi was a blast! still remember how you guys like to scare us girls on that hanging bridge!!! haha!!!
WHOA! YOU STILL REMEMBERED! YOU ARE STILL TRAUMATIZED BY IT AREN’T YOU?!?!
yeah! Looking back. But Bussorah streer or whatever?
No way man! To crowded, no air-con, SIGH.
