Good things sure come to an end, don’t they? So after so many glorious seasons and carving a name as the club’s top scorer along the way, Thierry Henry has finally bid his final goodbye to Arsenal. The talismanic striker has been pretty much the face of Arsenal, not Arsene Wenger really despite the similarity in names.
Arsenal fans, don’t give me that shocking face with your mouth wide open just yet. No doubt you guys from from a humble 30,000-odd seater of Highbury to the 60,000-odd seater Emirates Stadium but surely you can see this coming right?
David Dein resigned unexpectedly, Wenger refused to extend his current contract, there was a distinct lack of quality signings lately and even more obvious is the even more distinct lack of trophies.
So what if Fabregas signed a 100-year contract? Viera went away quietly and swiftly. I guess he was tired of playing the waiting game. Off he went to Inter Milan and the next thing he knew was that the Scudetto was in his grasp.
But Henry was a bit more forgiving. He gave the club another year to prove themselves but languishing fourth in the EPL and having Baptista as the only notable (loan) signing of the season, I guess enough is really enough for Henry.
Looking at Henry’s transfer fee of £16million, I sometimes do wonder why English players are so over-valued, and maybe even over-rated too. Charlton is asking for £17million for Darren Bent; Andrew Johnson’s supposedly worth £14million; Is Man Utd foolish to pay £17million for Owen Hargreaves?
After all Kaka was worth just a mere £4million when he first signed for AC Milan and look how much he has blossomed. Blame Chelsea for their big (and stupid) transfers of Shevchenko and Wright-Phillips. It sparked massive confusion on the value of players.
So much so that Cristiano Ronaldo’s £12million transfer fee looked like a bargain already. Thanks Chelsea for giving us all the illusion that money does grow on trees after all!
My apologies to those non-soccer fans who doesn’t understand a hoot about what I’m talking about. Actually come to think of it, I rarely make known my piece of mind about soccer issues!
But please do join me in pledging your future AGAINST supporting Chelsea FC, no matter if you’re a soccer fan or idiot!
